Statistical modelling/Sample size estimation

Now suppose 9 buds were picked and 10 fields of view were used. This gives the same total number of fields as in Experiment 1 but with more buds

Notice that the SED reduces from 5.653 to 4.664 when greater emphasis is put on replication at the upper layer.

Thus, 9 buds and 10 fields of view per slide could be considered to be a better experimental design than 6 buds and 15 fields of view. For the same amount of work a lower S.E.D. is likely.
